Quality of Life for the Caregiver

Facilitating a Spirit of Gentleness

A spirit of gentleness is develops companionship and builds community.

‘Gentleness’ means preventing any form of violence; it means we evoke peace; we do this by valuing:

  • Interdependence over independence

  • Nurturing over controlling

  • Unconditional love over rewards and punishments

  • Collective decision-making over self-determination

  • Nonviolence and dialogue over violence and confrontation

This is the approach that our Caregivers take when interacting with the Individuals we serve.

Caregivers have the support and guidance of a supervising mentor, whose responsibility is to demonstrate ‘a spirit of gentleness’ with them. Together, they assess and discuss each caregiver’s tools and interactive skills for facilitating a framework of Gentle Teaching and delivering the Quality of Life model of services. This support and resource for caregivers provides a natural path for their ongoing success in working with Individuals, and enriches their own professional development.

The Caregiver’s Portfolio

A portfolio is a place for Caregivers to display their best work, and a tool for illustrating their professional skills and responsibilities. It is a portable venue for papers and photographs, essays and movies, and reflections and dreams.  Creating a portfolio is an opportunity for caregivers to showcase the quality of their work.
